Melbourne's ultimate indoor construction playground for kids: Meet Diggerland

If you’ve got a little one who lives and breathes diggers, trucks and construction, get ready to visit this place often!

Diggerland is a brand new, construction-themed indoor play centre that’s just opened in Braeside, and it’s incredible. Designed for kids aged 1-10 years, it combines creative, sensory-rich play with hands-on equipment and real sand – lots of it!

We popped in this week and it was a total hit with both my boys. They were covered in sand, building towers, spinning cranes, loading wheelbarrows and completely immersed in their own little tradie world. If you’re tired of soft plays that all look the same, Diggerland is a must-visit.

@melbournewithsiri Melbourne families, get ready to DIG this! 🦺 🏗️ We just got an exclusive sneak peek at @diggerlandau - the brand new indoor play space in Braeside that’s about to break ground as your kids’ new favourite place to play. They have everything from mini excavators, cranes, trucks, and over 50 tonnes of sand just waiting for little hands to scoop, dump, and build - all in a relaxing environment to stimulate curious play and creative thinking (no loud music here, making it more sensory-friendly as well!) From tiny tots to big builders, kids can climb, dig, and create in huge sand zones, operate real machinery, and zoom around on ride-ons. There’s also a café for parents to recharge while the kids get to work. I love that it’s easy to keep an overview from the cafe, but it’s large enough for 2h of play (or more, my kids didn’t want to leave as there’s so much to explore!) Perfect for rainy days, birthday parties, or just an afternoon of imaginative fun that’s actually encouraged. 📍 Diggerland Melbourne, 2/200-208 Boundary Rd, Braeside 🗓️ Opening Nov 15 🎟️ Walk-ins welcome, online bookings recommended Drop a 🧡 below if your little one is ready to dig, build, and play all day - full review coming soon! 50 tons of sand, ride-ons and a brick-building zone

The main feature here is the 125 square metre indoor sandpit filled with 50 tons of real (triple-waashed!) sand. There are hundreds of quality toys to choose from and a smaller toddler-friendly sandpit tucked to the side for little ones still finding their feet. Older kids can jump straight into the action with toy excavators, wheelbarrows and construction tools.

Beyond the sand, there’s a block-building zone where kids can create towers, obstacle courses, or mini buildings using large foam bricks. A rotating pine tree adds to the fun, and encourages teamwork, stacking and creative play. There’s also a single slide and ball pit to break things up if your child needs to switch gears.

Mini machines, cranes and RC diggers

One of the highlights for us was the ride-on construction area. There’s a hand-crank train that loops around the central zone and several ride-ons scattered throughout. The hand-crank train was definitely my kids’ fave!

But the real wow factor? The rotating crane and excavators that come with included tokens. Each child aged 1yo+ gets two tokens included with their ticket to use in the crane, excavator or remote-control zone. Parents can even join in on the RC digger fun – I did too and I know some parents will never want to leave (ladies, bring your partners… as this is a perfect place for them too!)

The space is soft-floored and the cranes and diggers are gated. You can keep a clear line of sight across the area, which means you can easily keep an eye on multiple kids. There’s a café with barista-made coffee, snacks and lunch options, and birthday party packages are available if you’re planning a celebration.

Final thoughts

If your child is into anything construction-related, this place is going to blow their mind. It’s one of the most unique, well-thought-out indoor centres I’ve seen in Melbourne, owned by local parents who get it – and perfect year-round thanks to the fully indoor setup.

I’m always on the hunt for the best indoor play spaces in Melbourne – especially the ones where both kids and parents can actually enjoy themselves. Check out my full list of indoor gems here and follow along on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok for daily finds.
