Melbourne Royal Show: Top tips and hacks for families, saving money and getting the most out of your day

The Melbourne Royal Show is back from 24 September to 4 October 2026, and my biggest tip this year is simple: don’t overlook everything that’s already included in your ticket!

Yes, there are rides and showbags, but there are also more than 100 FREE things to do, see and discover once you’re through the gates – including Australia’s largest Animal Nursery, PAW Patrol Playland, live shows, stunt dogs, soccer activities, character performances, FMX stunts and nightly fireworks.

We’ve been a few years in a row now and I quickly realised you don’t need to say yes to every ride and game to have a fun day. Some of our favourite things were the animals and free entertainment around the grounds.

So here’s my guide to getting the most value from the Melbourne Royal Show in 2026.

If you’ve been waiting to visit the Melbourne Royal Show, this could make your family day out a LOT cheaper.

Opening Day Unlimited Rides Pass

Going on Thursday 24 September? Unlimited rides are available from 10am – 2pm:

Riders 120cm and under: $50
Riders over 120cm: $75

If rides are a big part of your day, I’d work out what you’ll realistically spend before arriving and pre-purchase where possible.

100+ FREE things are included in your ticket

PAW Patrol Playland – character meet and greets plus seven free activities including Putt Putt, a Scooter Track and Craft Zone.

Australia’s largest Animal Nursery – now in a new location with a refreshed layout and more opportunities to get close to the animals.

The Great Muster – working dogs, sheep, goats and ducks showcasing Australian farm life.

The Grand Parade – returning for the first time in more than 10 years.

Main Stage shows – PAW Patrol, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Care Bears, Madagascar Penguin Dance Party and Circus Farmers.

Farmer Dave’s Super Stunt Dogs – watch the dogs leap, race and weave through agility challenges.

Coles MiniRoos – kids can test their soccer skills with dribbling, passing and shooting challenges and receive merchandise for participating.

Crayola Scribble Scrubbie Pets – free activities and photo opportunities, plus the Crayola Crayon mascot roaming from 11am – 1pm daily.

Rural Pavilion shows – including live Chainsaw Masters Wood Carving and Embers & Echoes whip cracking.

Plus there are cultural performances, community bands, demonstrations and entertainment happening around the grounds.

You could fill a huge chunk of your day without buying a single ride!

Stay for the FREE nighttime shows

If your kids can handle a later night, stay!

The evening program includes the Blaze FMX Showdown, featuring the world-first Fire Diamond Jump.

That’s followed by The Drover’s Tale, featuring a Cobb & Co Coach, working dogs, liberty horses, cattle and more.

Then finish the night with fireworks 🎆

All included with your admission!

You could also watch the fireworks from the Ferris wheel. The Main Arena can get really busy around fireworks time, so here’s another option: jump on the Ferris wheel around 8:30pm and you could get an incredible view of the fireworks from above!

However – pack warm clothes! Even if it’s warm and sunny when you arrive, Melbourne evenings can cool down FAST. If you’re planning to stay for the nighttime entertainment and fireworks, bring jackets or an extra warm layer for everyone. You’ll be very glad you have them when the sun sets!

Melbourne Royal Show budget finds

Food is another area where costs can blow out, so these are worth knowing:

🌭 Sausage sizzle: $3.50, 11am – 2pm daily
🧀 Cheese toastie: $4 at Toastie House
🍔 Eats under $10: all 83 food vendors have at least one item under $10
🥤 $7 Pura milkshakes: great value find
🍝 Kids pasta: $5 when added to a main at Bianco Italian Piazza, or $10 standalone
🍰 FREE tiramisu: Pre-purchase the $25 Bianco Italian Piazza meal deal when buying your Show tickets online and choose one Classico main from any of the featured Italian regions + get a FREE house tiramisu for dessert
🐾 Farm Animal Pin Trail: for $8 kids can follow the trail and collect six adorable animal pins along the way. They’ll meet cows, sheep, horses, chickens, and dogs – and proudly wear their new pins like badges of honour.
💧 Water: Free refill stations around the grounds

The $3.50 Farmers BBQ sausage sizzle also supports drought relief.

I’d still pack snacks and refillable water bottles for the kids, then choose a couple of fun Show treats rather than buying absolutely everything onsite.

One hack to remember for next year

Keep an eye out for promotions before the Show! Highpoint Shopping Centre ran a promotion where shoppers who spent $100 or more in-centre on Saturday 19 September could receive two FREE Melbourne Royal Show passes, while stocks lasted.

What else should you budget for at the Melbourne Royal Show?

Entry gets you access to more than 100 free activities, experiences and shows, so you absolutely don’t need to pay for every extra once you’re inside.

But there are LOTS of tempting add-ons, especially with kids, so these are some of the extra costs I’d keep in mind when setting your Show budget:

🎡 Rides: Start from $8, but many of the bigger thrill rides are closer to $20-25 each, so this can add up FAST. I believe the Ferris Wheel was $9. Definitely buy a Ride Pass online before you go to save up to 25%.

Here’s my hack: Stick around the rides towards the end of the day! As families start heading home, you may find people offering their leftover ride tickets or credits to other families rather than letting them go to waste. Obviously don’t count on this as part of your budget, but it’s worth hanging around and you might get lucky!

🎯 Carnival games: Budget extra if your kids love these, prices start from around $10
🐐 Animal feed at the petting zoo: $3 per cup. Entry to the nursery itself is FREE, so you don’t need to buy feed to visit
🎒 Showbags: There are hundreds to choose from at different price points starting from $5
💇‍♀️ Hair braiding: Around $70
🎨 Face painting: Around $20
🦎 Reptile Encounter photos: Another optional paid experience we spotted
💎 Permanent jewellery: Forever Linked around $80
🎯 Shopping: There are HEAPS of stalls, so you may want to factor in a little spending money here too. We somehow came home with squishy dumplings 😂
🍔 Food: You can bring your own snacks and food, mix that with some of the budget options around the Show, or make trying the Show food part of the experience
🚗 Parking: We paid $30, although you can potentially save here by finding free parking nearby or taking public transport
🔐 Locker hire: Very handy if you’re buying showbags early or don’t want to carry everything around all day. Standard all-day lockers $10-$14, larger Jumbo lockers $23 or $2 single-use coin lockers around the grounds for quick storage.

My tip: If you’re staying through to the nighttime entertainment, consider grabbing your showbags earlier and putting them in a locker. Much easier than carrying giant bags through rides, animal pavilions and shows for the next five hours!

This is why I recommend deciding on a rough spending budget before you arrive. The Show can actually be a really affordable day if you concentrate on all the included activities though.

What’s new to eat in 2026?

There’s a new Best Bites competition, with six winning creations available exclusively at the Show.

You’ll also find the new Bianco Italian Piazza, with pasta from Roma, pizza from Napoli, Toscana Grill and the Amalfi Bar. Pre-purchase a meal deal online and you’ll receive a free dessert with your main.

And for something cheap and kid-friendly, the new Toastie House has five of its seven toasties under $10.

Don’t miss the 10 Best Bites – I wish we’d tried more!

One thing I actually regret from our day? Not trying more of the 10 Best Bites! I properly looked through the full list afterwards and some of these sound SO good.

The Best Bites are special dishes from food vendors around the Show, with everything from $9 desserts to completely over-the-top $28 noodles.

  1. 🍜 Dragon Express – Flying Noodles: $28
  2. 🌭 Fettayleh’s – Best in Show Dog: $20
  3. 🍗 El’s Fried Chicken – Chicken & Waffle Wand: $10
  4. 🥪 Toastie House – The Royal Beef Melt: $12
  5. 🍗 Dragon Express – Honey Chick Cup: $25
  6. 🐉 Tanghulu – Dragon’s Breath: $14
  7. 🥞 Naval’s Dutch Pancakes – Loaded Hot Choc Stack: $22
  8. 🧇 Jeddo’s Waffle Sticks – Dubai Crunch Waffle Stick: $17
  9. 🍦 Toastie House – Cereal-ously Good Toastie: $9.50
  10. 🍩 Gianni’s Churros – The Jam Jar Churro: $9

Prices range from $9 to $28, so there are actually a few reasonably priced options amongst the giant novelty creations.

If I was planning our food again, I’d probably pick two or three Best Bites in advance and share them rather than deciding what to eat once everyone was already hungry. There are so many food stalls at the Show that it’s very easy to walk straight past some of the most interesting things!

Our itinerary

One thing that made our day SO much easier this year was actually having a plan before we arrived.

There is so much happening at the Melbourne Royal Show that it’s very easy to walk in, get distracted by the first thing you see and suddenly realise you’ve missed something you really wanted to do.

So here’s a little tip: copy the daily program before you go, add it into ChatGPT, tell it the things you REALLY don’t want to miss and ask it to create a schedule for your day!

That’s what I did this year and it made everything so much easier!

I added the shows and activities we wanted to see, our arrival time and the things that were priorities for the boys, then used that as a rough plan while still leaving room to wander.

One hack for quieter times is to consider Grand Final Day or a weekday. This can traditionally be a quieter day at the Melbourne Royal Show because so much of Melbourne’s attention is on the footy.

Our day looked like this:

12:00pm – Park + arrive
12:30pm – PAW Patrol Playland
1:30pm – Ponies and Farm Play: Cluck & Collect, Colour a Feather + Corn Pit
2:00pm – Little Farmers Field: harvest, sunflower pot + Kubota tractor ride
2:30pm – Bianco pizza + pasta lunch
3:00pm – Livestock Pavilion + photo with Hephner the Alpaca
3:30pm – Interactive activities at the Victorian Community Pavilion (by VICSES)
3:50pm – Sensory room break
4:00pm – Sunrise Animal Nursery + animal feed
4:45pm – Showbags
5:15pm – The Great Muster
5:30pm – Madagascar Penguins Dance Party
6:00pm – FMX Stunt Show
6:15pm – Twilight rides
7:15pm – Food + grab seats at the Main Arena
7:45pm – Blaze FMX Showdown
8:00pm – The Drover’s Tale
8:30pm – Fireworks

In between we still had time to wander through the shops, play carnival games, grab food and explore, because there is SO much happening everywhere you look.

Think equestrian shows at the arena, sheep shearing, woodchop championships, cow milking, dog shows, wildlife experiences, Coles MiniRoos activation and SO much more.

Obviously you don’t need to follow our exact schedule, but hopefully it gives you an idea of how much you can fit into an afternoon and evening.

If your family is BIG on rides, I’d arrive earlier in the morning and factor in a lot more ride time. We weren’t trying to get through every ride, so starting at 12:30pm worked really well for us.

How much did we spend at the Melbourne Royal Show?

This is probably one of the biggest questions parents have about the Show, because while there is so much includedwith your entry ticket, it can also become a very expensive day.

Here’s what we spent:

🎟️ Entry: $79 – 1 adult + 1 child, with our 4-year-old free
🎡 Ride Pass: $44 – online price for a $50 credit
🎯 Carnival games: $30
🐐 Animal feed: $6 – 2 cups at the Sunrise Animal Nursery
🍕 Bianco pizza: $22
🍝 Bianco pasta: $24 + $5 for a kids pasta
🌭 Fettayleh Best in Show Dog: $20 + $10 for a classic hot dog
🍪 Plus: cookies, a potato twister + some chips (around $10 each)
🎒 Showbags: $70 – 2 showbags
🛍️ Shopping: $20
🚗 Parking: $30

Total: around $400 for the day.

We also brought snacks and lunch boxes from home.

And remember, this is just our day. You could absolutely spend much less by focusing on the huge number of included activities, bringing more food from home, skipping carnival games and shopping, choosing cheaper showbags and taking public transport or finding free parking nearby.

On the other hand, if your kids want to spend most of the day on rides, play lots of carnival games and come home carrying half the Showbag Pavilion, I’d definitely budget more.

55+ rides across three carnival areas

There are more than 55 rides this year, split into three easy areas:

🎠 Kids Carnival: Younger kids, with Go Gator Coaster, Crazy Clown Cars, Cup & Saucer.

🎡 Adventure Carnival: Family rides and kids around 6-16, including Pirates Revenge, Sky Flyer, Twister.

🎢 Thrillseekers Carnival: The Warrior, The Beast, The Joker.

Plus there are three new rides in 2026 too:

🎢 No 1 Breakdance – Adventure Carnival
🚐 Surf Kombi Van – Kids Carnival
☄️ The Void – Thrillseekers Carnival

Hot tip: Pre-purchase your Rides Pass online and you can save up to 25%.

350+ showbags from $5

There are more than 350 showbags inside the Showbag Pavilion, with prices ranging from $5 to around $80.

New ones for 2026 include Gem, Stranger Things, Avatar, Squeezos and Peelerz.

My biggest tip? Look at the showbags online BEFORE you go.

Let the kids choose what they want and set the budget beforehand. Walking into the biggest Showbag Pavilion in the Southern Hemisphere and asking them to choose on the spot is asking for chaos 😂

Buy the showbags early. Yes, they’re annoying to carry around all day, but some of the popular showbags can sell out. And remember being a kid and waiting ALL day for your showbag?! I don’t want my kids spending half the day asking when we’re finally going to get them. We grabbed ours earlier, then you can put them in a locker or use the pram as storage and get on with enjoying the Show.

My hack? Wait until after the Show for discounted showbags. Keep an eye on showbags.com.au after the Melbourne Royal Show finishes. They often run around 10% off showbags for the week after the Show, so this can be a handy way to grab a bag you missed or save a little money if the kids don’t need the full Showbag Pavilion experience on the day.

Need a break? There’s a dedicated Sensory Lounge

If the Show starts to feel a little overwhelming, head to the ONCALL Sensory Lounge in the Port Phillip Room inside the Victoria Community Pavilion, opposite the Animal Nursery.

We popped in for a break during our day and it’s dark, quiet and designed to give you some breathing space away from the crowds, noise and stimulation. Inside you’ll find sensory projections, an LED bubble tube, comfortable seating, tables with colouring activities and fidget toys.

There’s also water and charging facilities available – just remember to bring your own charger!

Even if you only need 10 or 15 minutes to reset before heading back out, it’s really handy to know this space is there.

How to get to the Melbourne Royal Show

🚆 Train – probably the easiest

Special Metro services run directly to Showgrounds Station from Flinders Street, Southern Cross and North Melbourne during the Show.

The first train arrives at the Showgrounds at around 9:25am, which is pretty perfect if you want to arrive early and make a full day of it.

Kids under 18 travel FREE across Victoria with a Youth myki, and adult public transport fares are half price.

If you’re travelling regionally, V/Line fares are also capped at reduced amounts.

🚋 Tram

Route 57 stops near Melbourne Showgrounds and is another good option from the city or if you want to park further away and tram the final stretch.

🚗 Driving

You can drive, but parking around the Showgrounds gets busy, so have a plan before leaving.

Official parking is available at Flemington Racecourse for $30 per vehicle per day, card only, and can’t be pre-booked. The VRC managed car park opens from 8am.

Also note that parking will be particularly limited on Saturday 3 October because of Turnbull Stakes Day, so I’d strongly consider the train that day.

Parking restrictions can change, so don’t rely on that exact spot – always check the street signs when you arrive.

Best options:

Ascot Vale West Primary School parking: Around $20, with the money going straight back into the school’s funds – so you’re supporting the local school while parking for the day.

Epsom Rd car park (8am–8pm) and Smithfield Rd car park (9:30am–1pm) are also open, but spots are limited.

Some families park further out (like near Anglers Tavern or Highpoint) and take the #57 tram the rest of the way to avoid congestion.

Street parking is available outside permit zones, we found a free spot near H.W. Cousins Reserve. Cut through the reserve and it’s about a 5 min walk to the quieter Gate 6.

Some neighbouring properties also open up their drive way for paid parking.

Hot tip: if you’re driving with younger kids, arrive by 9am to avoid the traffic jams and to lock in a park close to the gates.

My Gate 6 tip

Gate 6 is much quieter than the entrances around the train station when we visited and put us straight into a really family-friendly part of the Show.

My tips for doing the Melbourne Royal Show

Don’t try to see everything. You won’t. Pick a few must-dos and let the rest happen.

Look at the free program FIRST. With more than 100 included activities and experiences, you can have a massive day before paying for a single ride.

Get ChatGPT to plan your day. Add the Show program into ChatGPT or Claude, tell it what time you’re arriving and the things you really want to do, then ask it to create a realistic schedule around the set show times. You can even tell it whether your family is more into rides, animals, shows or free activities. Screenshot the plan and use it as a rough guide!

Agree on the extras before you arrive. Whether that’s one showbag + two rides, a set Ride Pass or a spending amount, having the conversation at home is much easier than having it underneath a flashing carnival ride.

Take public transport if it works for you. Kids under 18 travelling free with a Youth myki and adults paying half-price fares makes the train particularly appealing this year.

Bring a pram for younger kids. This is a BIG day with a lot of walking. Just know you may need to leave your pram outside certain experiences.

Bring snacks and refillable bottles. You can absolutely still buy the fun Show food without needing to purchase every single meal, snack and drink.

Dress the kids so you can spot them easily. The Show gets incredibly busy. I like bright clothing and taking a photo of the kids that morning so I know exactly what they’re wearing. I also tuck an airtag in their pocket.

Choose a meeting point. If you’re visiting with multiple adults or older kids, pick an obvious landmark when you arrive in case anyone gets separated.

Use the Quiet Space if someone needs it. There’s a dedicated ONCALL Sensory Lounge, located at the Port Phillip Room inside the Victoria Pavilion.

Check the Show map for more.

Wear comfortable shoes. This isn’t the day for cute-but-questionable footwear. You will walk.

Is the Melbourne Royal Show worth it with toddlers and little kids?

Yes! There is SO much to do at the Melbourne Royal Show with little kids, and we’ve been taking ours since they were around 2 years old. But it is a BIG day for little legs, so I definitely approach the Show differently with younger kids.

My biggest recommendation is to bring a pram or stroller AND a backpack. Even if your child doesn’t normally use a pram anymore, this is the day I’d bring it. We clocked around 20,000 steps during our visit, so having somewhere for tired kids to sit or nap can completely save the day. Bonus: the pram becomes storage!

Plan your visit around naps. If your little one still naps, either time your arrival around it or bring the pram so they can sleep while you keep exploring.

Go on a weekday if you can. It’s generally going to be easier to navigate with little kids when there are fewer people around. Grand Final Day also tends to be a quieter day at the Show, so that’s another date I’d consider if crowds are a concern.

Skip the Thrill Rides section if you don’t need it. This tends to be one of the louder, busier and more chaotic parts of the Showgrounds. There is plenty for younger kids to do elsewhere, so you don’t need to drag a toddler through the busiest ride areas just to see everything.

Use the ONCALL Sensory Lounge for a reset. You’ll find it in the Port Phillip Room inside the Victoria Community Pavilion, opposite the Animal Nursery. It’s dark and quiet with sensory projections, an LED bubble tube, seating, colouring, fidget toys, water and charging facilities. Even 10 or 15 minutes away from the crowds and noise can make such a difference.

There are parent rooms and changing facilities too, so make a mental note of where they are when you arrive rather than waiting until you desperately need one.

Dress little kids so they’re easy to spot. I put mine in bright clothing when we go somewhere this busy. I also pop an AirTag on them and write my phone number on their arm in case we ever get separated. I take a quick photo of them at the start of the day too, so I have an up-to-date photo showing exactly what they’re wearing.

If you get separated, YELL OUT! Don’t search quietly while panicking – call out a clear description of your child so the people around you know to start looking too. For example: “I’m looking for a 4-year-old boy with dark hair, wearing a PAW Patrol T-shirt and jeans!” Keep repeating the description as you look around. It immediately gets more eyes searching with you rather than everyone assuming you’re simply calling someone’s name.

And pack for a VERY Melbourne day. Bring snacks, refillable water bottles, sunscreen, earmuffs or hearing protection and warm layers or jackets for later. The Show can get really loud, particularly around the rides, Main Arena, live entertainment and fireworks, so earmuffs are definitely worth throwing in the pram or backpack for little kids or anyone sensitive to noise.

Most importantly, lower the expectations and follow their pace. With little kids, I’d choose a handful of things you really want to do, leave plenty of room for snacks and breaks, and accept that you won’t see everything. We’ve been doing the Show with our boys since they were tiny, and that’s what makes it enjoyable rather than exhausting.

A Melbourne Royal Membership could save you money

If you’re already looking at the ticket prices and thinking you could easily spend more than one day at the Show, it’s worth checking the Melbourne Royal Memberships before buying your tickets.

Membership runs from 1 April to 31 March each year, and there are a few different options depending on how often you think you’ll visit.

Full Membership – $199

This is the biggest membership option and Melbourne Royal values the package at more than $1,000.

For $199, a Full Membership includes:

🎟️ Free admission to all 11 days of the Melbourne Royal Show
👫 A fully transferable guest pass with free VIP entry across all 11 days
➕ Option to purchase up to two additional guest passes
🚗 Discounted Show parking at Flemington Racecourse
🔐 Free locker hire
🍽️ Access to the Members Dining Bistro
💺 Access to members seating areas, subject to availability
⚡ Access to member express entry gates
🐐 VIP access to the Animal Nursery
🏆 Discounts on entry fees for Agricultural, Rural & Leisure competitions

You also receive additional benefits throughout the membership year including invitations and discounts for selected Melbourne Royal events, reciprocal rights at other Royal Shows, free parking at Melbourne Showgrounds events, the members newsletter and AGM voting rights.

Why could this be worth it? If you’re someone who wants to visit the Show multiple times rather than trying to cram EVERYTHING into one enormous day, having admission for all 11 days plus a transferable guest pass could completely change how you approach it.

You could do an animal and kids activity day, come back another evening for rides and fireworks, or visit without feeling like you need to squeeze every free activity, show and pavilion into one visit.

Show Membership – $110

This is probably the option I’d look at closely if you simply want more than one day at the Melbourne Royal Show.

For $110, Show Membership includes:

🎟️ Free admission on any two Show days
👫 A fully transferable guest pass providing free entry on any two Show days
🚗 Discounted Show parking at Flemington Racecourse
🍽️ Access to the Members Dining Bistro
💺 Access to members seating areas, subject to availability
⚡ Access to member express entry gates
🐐 VIP access to the Animal Nursery
🏆 Discounts on entry fees for selected Agricultural, Rural & Leisure competitions

You also receive invitations and discounts to selected Melbourne Royal events, free parking at Melbourne Showgrounds events and the members newsletter.

For families who find one giant Show day overwhelming, being able to split your visit over two days could be a huge benefit. You could spend one day focusing on the animals, free activities and entertainment, then return another day for rides, showbags and the nighttime program.

Junior Membership – $85

There’s also a Junior Membership for $85, available to anyone under 18 as at 1 April 2026.

It includes:

🎟️ Free admission to all 11 Show days
🎡 $10 Ride Pass
💺 Access to members seating areas, subject to availability
⚡ Access to member express entry gates
🐐 VIP access to the Animal Nursery
🎪 Reciprocal rights to other Royal Shows
💌 Melbourne Royal members newsletter

If you’ve got an older child who LOVES the Show and you’re likely to return several times, this is another option worth doing the maths on.

Which Melbourne Royal Membership offers the best value?

It really depends on how you plan to use it.

Show Membership – $110: worth looking at if you want to split your Show experience across two days and bring a guest.

Full Membership – $199: makes much more sense if you’re likely to visit multiple times, want the transferable guest pass and will use some of the additional Melbourne Royal benefits throughout the year.

Junior Membership – $85: could be worth considering for Show-obsessed kids who’ll visit on multiple days.

The big thing is to work out how many times you’ll realistically visit before automatically buying individual tickets. If you’re planning several Show days, membership could give you much more flexibility and mean you don’t feel pressured to do absolutely everything in one visit.

Membership benefits, conditions and pricing above are for the 2026 membership year and may change. Check Melbourne Royal directly for current inclusions and eligibility before purchasing.

I was kindly sponsored our entry tickets, plus food and ride vouchers, as part of a promotional collaboration with the Melbourne Royal Show. I’ve included the full value of our day and what we would have spent without the vouchers for transparency.

If this made you pause, smile or see something differently, then it was worth writing.
