Top Tips for the Melbourne Royal Show 2025
Family Guide to Tickets, Parking, Rides and Showbags

The Melbourne Royal Show is back for 2025, running from Thursday 25 September to Sunday 5 October at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Flemington.

For generations, this springtime event has been a must-do for families, blending farmyard fun, thrilling rides, dazzling entertainment, and of course – showbags. From feeding baby animals and watching world-class stunt shows to indulging in foodie finds and staying for the nightly fireworks, it’s the kind of outing where kids light up and parents get swept up in the magic too.

But here’s the thing… with so much happening, the Show can feel overwhelming (and pricey!) if you don’t plan ahead. That’s why I’ve pulled together all the insider tips you’ll need – from parking hacks and ride pass savings to budget-friendly food finds and free activities. Think of this as your family’s cheat sheet to making the Melbourne Royal Show a day of unforgettable memories, minus the chaos.

@melbournewithsiri The magic of Disney has arrived in Melbourne - and it’s bringing your favourite characters to life on ice. 🤍 Disney On Ice is on now at Rod Laver Arena with all the dazzling costumes, music, and heart you’d expect. From Moana gliding across the rink to Elsa’s icy powers, Mickey, Minnie, Belle, Ariel, Rapunzel, and more - it’s a real-life fairytale for every Disney fan. We saw little ones waving bubble wands, families singing along, and that enchanting joy you only get at a Disney show. The skating, the costumes, the lights… it’s like stepping into a storybook for the afternoon. And honestly, my inner Disney princess loved every minute of it. I couldn’t even pick a favourite - the whole show from Ariel to Belle, Rapunzel and Frozen is dazzling. It’s 100% worth it. It’s only here until 20 July - dress up and sing your hearts out. Food & pavilions

  • The Food Pavilion is a lifesaver when you need a rest. Every vendor is required to have at least one item under $10, so it’s easier to find budget bites.

  • The Farmers BBQ sausage sizzle is a must-do at just $3.50 from 11am–2pm daily.

  • Show classics like twisty potatoes, fairy floss and snow cones keep the kids happy, but this year there’s also new stalls like Stix Waffles, LA Loops and Ben & Jerry’s.

Free activities & entertainment

  • Little Farmers Field – veggie digging, egg collecting, tractor rides and baby animals.

  • LEGO Playland – free zones for toddlers through to big kids.

  • Metro Train Ride – scenic and free, great for tired legs.

  • Shows like FMX stunts, Night of the Horse and fireworks at 8.30pm daily – perfect if you stay late.

Getting there & parking

  • By train: special Royal Melbourne Show trains run direct to Showgrounds Station from Flinders Street Station, Sourhern Cross and North Melbourne Station.

  • By tram: Route 57 drops you at the gates.

  • By car: limited parking (around $20–$30) at Flemington Racecourse and nearby schools, but traffic is heavy. Park at Anglers Tavern or Ascot Vale Primary School and walk or take the tram in. We ended up parking on the corner of Angler Pde and Charles St, near the H.W. Cousins Reserve, which was not a permit zone and free for the day. We cut through the playground at the reserve and was about a 5 min walk to the quieter Gate 5 entry.

  • Entry hack: Gate 5 on Langs Road is the best entrance for families with young kids. It’s a small entrance and not near the train station so it’s quieter and it leads right into an area with rides, the dog pavilion to your left, and the animal nursery and Little Farmers Field straight ahead. Winner!

Family survival tips

  • Dress kids in bright colours and take a photo of them that morning – just in case. Pop a tracker in their pockets or insoles as well.

  • Bring prams for little ones, but know you’ll need to park them in certain areas like the Animal Nursery.

  • Use the Quiet Space inside the Spotlight Makers Pavilion if the day gets overwhelming.

  • BYO snacks, refillable water bottles and sunscreen.

Top tips for doing the Melbourne Royal Show on a budget

Let’s be honest – the Show can add up quickly. Between tickets, rides, food, games and showbags, it’s easy to walk out with a much lighter wallet. But with a little planning, you can still give the kids a magical day out without blowing the budget. Here are my go-to hacks:

1. Pre-purchase tickets and ride passes

Buying online saves you up to 25% on both entry and rides. Early bird family tickets are usually under $100 and kids under 4 are free. Ride passes are cheaper in advance and stop you from pulling out cash for every single ride.

2. Set limits before you go

We stick to one ride, one game, one showbag each. It keeps the kids happy, sets clear expectations, and saves the mid-day meltdowns when they see something else shiny.

3. Take public transport

Parking can be $25+ and traffic is full-on. Trains run direct to Showgrounds Station and the #57 tram drops you at the gates. That’s money saved for snacks or a showbag.

4. Pack smart snacks and water

Food stalls are fun, but they add up fast. Bring refillable bottles and a few favourites from home. Then top it off with one special treat – like a twisty potato or the $3.50 Farmers BBQ sausage.

5. Prioritise the free stuff

There’s so much included in your ticket – the Animal Nursery, Little Farmers Field, LEGO Playland, FMX stunt shows, roving performers, even nightly fireworks at 8.30pm. Spend most of your time here and you’ll still have a huge day.

6. Go after 5pm for cheaper tickets

If you’ve got older kids, consider the Show After Dark pass. It’s discounted and you still get the rides, food, entertainment and fireworks without the same cost as a full day.

Tickets – prices, savings & tips

Tickets for the Melbourne Royal Show must be purchased online – there are no gate sales. If you’re planning to go, I recommend booking early to avoid missing out on popular days.

2025 ticket prices

  • Family pass (2 adults + 2 kids): approx. $99 (early bird)
  • Adults: from $39.60
  • Kids (5–14 years): from $20.80
  • Children 4 & under: free
  • Seniors: discounted tickets on Tuesday 30 September for $25

Special ticket options

Flexi-Tickets – perfect if you want flexibility. They let you pick any day of the 11-day Show without locking in ahead.

After Dark tickets – discounted entry after 5pm. Adults $29, kids $15. This is ideal if you’re heading in for rides, fireworks and live entertainment without the full day commitment.

Ride passes

Rides aren’t included in your entry ticket – so if your kids love rides, a Ride Pass is the way to go. Pre-purchasing online can save you up to 25%.

  • $50 Ride Pass – pay $42
  • $100 Ride Pass – pay $80
  • $150 Ride Pass – pay $118
  • $200 Ride Pass – pay $150

Each child will need their own Ride Pass, and they can’t be shared – so work out in advance how many rides they’ll likely want to do.

Unlimited Rides Passes are also available for Opening Day, Thursday 25 September, valid from 10am to 2pm. The pass allows for unlimited rides on all valid rides, with the exception of pony rides.

Hot tip: bundle your entry ticket with Ride Passes online for even more savings.

How to get to the Melbourne Royal Show – transport & parking tips

The Showgrounds can get really busy, so planning your trip in advance will make things smoother.

By train

The easiest way is to hop on a special Showgrounds train service that runs directly to Showgrounds Station during the event. Trains depart from Flinders Street, Southern Cross and North Melbourne stations, and drop you right at the gates. It’s pram-friendly and definitely the quickest way in with kids.

By tram

The Route 57 tram (West Maribyrnong to Flinders Street Station) also stops at the Showgrounds Village / Epsom Road stop – right outside the venue. If you’re coming from the CBD or North Melbourne, this is a reliable option.

By car

Driving is possible, but parking is limited and fills up fast. Expect to pay around $20–$30 for the day, depending on the lot.

Best options:

Flemington Racecourse car park – $30 per day.

Ascot Vale West Primary School – a popular option.

Epsom Rd car park (8am–8pm) and Smithfield Rd car park (9:30am–1pm) are also open, but spots are limited.

Some families park further out (like near Anglers Tavern) and take the #57 tram the rest of the way to avoid congestion.

Street parking is available outside permit zones, we found a free spot near H.W. Cousins Reserve. Cut through the reserve and it’s about a 5 min walk to the quieter Gate 5.

Hot tip: if you’re driving with younger kids, arrive by 9am to avoid the traffic jams and to lock in a park close to the gates.

Animals & agriculture highlights at the Melbourne Royal Show

For little ones (and grown-ups) who adore animals, this is where the Show really shines. It’s a chance to step into a mini farm world without leaving Melbourne – and it’s always a hit with families.

Animal nursery & petting zones

The Animal Nursery is where kids can pat and feed the cutest baby animals – lambs, piglets, chicks, goats, alpacas, and more. It’s one of the most popular areas, so head here early before it gets busy. Animal feed cups are just a few dollars and guarantee squeals of delight.

Little Farmers Field

This is an interactive free zone designed for younger kids to experience farm life hands-on. They can:

  • Dig for veggies

  • Collect eggs

  • Pretend to shear sheep

  • Ride mini tractors

  • Cuddle baby animals

It’s educational and playful, and a great way for city kids to connect with where food comes from.

Farm animal pin trail

For just $5, kids can follow the trail and collect six adorable animal pins along the way. They’ll meet cows, sheep, horses, chickens, and dogs – and proudly wear their new pins like badges of honour.

Animal shows & demonstrations

Don’t miss the live shows where you can watch:

  • Sheep shearing and milking demonstrations

  • Dog shows and working dog trials

  • Horse events, including the epic Night of the Horse show – an Australian-first equine spectacular blending artistry and action.

There’s always something happening in the arena, so check the schedule when you arrive.

Rides & showbags – family favourites

No visit to the Show is complete without a whirl on the rides and a wander through the Showbag Pavilion. They’re the parts kids talk about for weeks afterwards – but they’re also the areas where costs can climb quickly.

Ride passes & saving money

If rides are on your family’s wishlist, grab a Rides Pass online in advance – you’ll save up to 25% compared to paying per ride. Passes come loaded onto a digital wristband and are available in values like $50, $100, $150 and $200. Each child needs their own pass, so decide how many rides they’ll likely do beforehand.

Tip: set expectations early with your kids – for example, “3 rides each and then we explore the free stuff.” It avoids mid-afternoon meltdowns and helps you stick to budget.

Carnival zones

There are three main carnival precincts:

  • Kids Carnival – gentle rides, mini rollercoasters and fun houses for younger children.

  • Thrill Seeker Zone – for teens (and brave adults!) with giant slides, the Matterhorn, log rides and more.

  • Classic family rides – like the Ferris Wheel, which gives you sweeping views of the Showgrounds and Melbourne city.

Showbags – how to plan ahead

The Showbag Pavilion is an absolute wonderland for kids – but also overwhelming. Prices range from around $5 for treat bags to $30+ for big-name toy and character bags.

My tip is to check the official showbag list online with your kids before you go. That way, they know what’s on offer and you can agree on limits together. For younger ones, consider letting them pick one toy bag and one food bag each.

Hot tip: buy showbags at the end of the day so you’re not lugging them around the grounds. Or stash them in a locker ($10–$20 depending on size) if you want to be hands-free.

Budget-friendly rule of thumb

To keep things affordable, many families follow the “one ride, one game, one showbag” rule. Add in all the free activities (and there are heaps of them), and you’ll still have a huge day without blowing the budget.

Using a tracker or AirTag on my kids at busy events

One of my top tips for big events like the Show is popping a tracker like an AirTag onto your kids – just in case. I usually loop a keychain onto their pants, tuck it in a pocket or use a bracelet or pin.

You can even get special insoles with tracker slots for their shoes. It’s one of those simple things that gives you peace of mind knowing you’ll be able to quickly locate them if you ever get separated in the crowds.

My husband works for a tech company, so you can use code SIRI25 for 25% off their tracker tags here along with the keychain here.

Make it a magical family memory

The Melbourne Royal Show is all about family fun – from baby animals to fireworks. With a little planning (and a few budget hacks), you can soak up the magic without blowing the budget. Pack your comfy shoes and get ready for a day the kids will never forget.
